About this deal

Market day, Tristan, Siegfried, and James go to the market to pay bills and to buy the necessary items to their house. This observation, which lightens the mood along with some comical dialogs that ensues with cow’s owner, sets the tone for the book. Even while at the end of his wits, we find a character who finds amusement from simple things from his surroundings which adds that extra bit of appeal even in his descriptions of surgeries and other animal medical conditions, which can be a bit squeamish if described in dry medical terms. While that childhood dream did not come true, I have never lost the fondness for Herriot's work. So, when this book turned up on our office swap shelf, I nabbed it.

And it turns out this is something I’ve read before. Because All Creatures Great and Small, probably his best-known and best-loved book, was originally published in part as If Only They Could Talk. ( All Creatures Great and Small also included It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet and Let Sleeping Vets Lie; these three books were on their own considered too short to be marketed as standalone books, and so were combined into a single volume). Heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measure, If Only They Could Talk is a book for all those who find laughter and joy in animals, and who know and understand the magic and beauty of Britain’s wild places. You really get a glimpse at the Author’s own life, humour & the beautiful dales that so many of us have come to love. 🌄 What an endearing bunch of characters. It was a bedtime read, and I realised that every night I was looking forward to going to bed, just so I could read some more....

Season two of the hit TV adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small is now showing on Channel 5, featuring Sam West as Siegfried Farnon. Tristan takes care of the pigs. They become more powerful as they get older, and eventually escape and cause havoc and are sold. Siegfried argues with Tristan for arriving at 4 am. Mr. James and Tristan were getting ready to go to a village party; moreover Siegfried said that Tristan must go to see a case of a pig’s ear that was infected. It couldn’t wait longer. Tristan was wearing his best clothes and he had to attend his brother’s command.

People around the world became curious about the statues after the Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl made Easter Island famous, and there are different theories about how the statues were moved to the beach. Many researchers think the statues were pulled along the ground using ropes and wood. A retrospective to James’s college days, when he fancied himself an expert on horses after attending one lecture. On the other hand, a more optimistic view of the island’s history comes from the archaeologists Terry Hunt of the University of Hawaii and Carl Lipo of California State University Long Beach. They suggest that the inhabitants actually pioneered a type of sustainable farming, building thousands of circular stone walls, called manavai, and gardening inside them. And their theory about how the moai were moved is that they could be ‘walked’ along using a system of only ropes and a few people. In the series, Siegfried tells James that the horse is “a colt”. The “colt” drags Siegfried across a field. Overall, Herriot's books are a testament t Siegfried decides to become self-sufficient and acquires hens and pigs. The hens escape and fail to lay and are eventually given away.

James Herriot, or in truth, James Alfred Wright, is a master storyteller, whose ability to paint scenes and emotions with only his words is truly astounding. How anyone can write so elegantly, and truthfully, is a rare and astonishing thing. His memoirs should truly be cherished, this first book setting an excellent scene for many humorous and poignant works. A first edition, first printing published by Michael Joseph in 1970. A very good+ book with one gift inscription in a near fine clipped wrapper. The rare first appearance of James Herriot and the inspiration for the popular BBC series featuring Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy. That man in the picture had just finished an excellent lunch and had moved next door to do a bit of calving just for the sheer pleasure of it, as a kind of dessert.”Dalam bayangan saya, si James ini menceritakan kejadian lucu yang dialaminya dengan muka lempeng, soalnya bahasanya juga lempeng aja sih...cuma pembaca yang membayangkan situasinya yang ga bisa menahan tawa. In his books, Wight calls the town where he lives and works Darrowby, which he based largely on the towns of Thirsk and Sowerby. He also renamed Donald Sinclair and his brother Brian Sinclair as Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, respectively. Wight's books are only partially autobiographical. Many of the stories are only loosely based on real events or people, and thus can be considered primarily fiction. Nothing on the masterpiece of words, the thought out plot, the detail that Orwell describes extensively, not even mentioning the main characters. Or the ending....

[Dustwrapper artwork and illustrations by Larry.] 'ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL': SIGNED SET WITH LOCAL PROVENANCE This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition of If Only They Could Talk features an afterword by Yorkshire Shepherdess and author Amanda Owen. Herriot arrives to Yorkshire Dales looking for a job as Veterinary Surgeon Assistant with the veterinarian Siegfried Farnon. In ‘ If Only They Could Talk’, the first book in a series of his semi-autobiographies, the reader gets acquainted with a young James Herriot, just out of veterinary college, taking up a rural practice in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire during late 1930s. In the narrative he creates a fictional village called ‘ Darrowby’ based on the town of Thirsk and the surroundings rural areas, which act as the perfect setting for describing his amusing experiences about the early days of his veterinary career. Pulitzer Prize winner Jared Diamond has suggested that many people were needed to build and move the moai. As a result, the island’s trees were cut down for wood and to create farming land. This open land was fragile and it was soon eroded by the strong winds, so it was very difficult to grow food. The situation was an early example of an ecological disaster, according to Diamond. I’ve just finished the first James Herriot book, “If Only They Could Talk”, and have compiled a table of which chapters correspond to which episodes of the TV series. One major difference between this book and the early TV episodes is that it does not feature Helen Alderson at all; she first appears in the second volume “It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet”.
