About this deal

The setting is Tyneside during World War II, but the theme is timeless - a child alone in the adult world, living off his wits and learning how to survive on his own. Different children can handle different things and I strongly recommend parents of impressionable children read this slender volume first. I was surprised how many parts of coast he described I actually did visit or even lived on at least for a short time myself.

Paul Theroux's round-Britain travelogue is funny, perceptive and 'best avoided by patriots with high blood pressure.I hope that if he repeated his journey today he would find that things had changed since the 1980s and cycling would be considered viable. Travel was done in late spring and summer of 1982, during the Falklands War, which starts many of his conversations with folks. One of his golden talents, perhaps because he is American and therefore classless in British eyes, is the ability to chat up and get on with all sorts and conditions of British.

Overall, this was a good little adventure story of a boy surviving on his own by the ocean after his home gets bombed out in WWII.Back to where everything was just as it always had been, and you did things without thinking about them.

Nowhere in Britain is more than 65 miles from the sea so he decided his route would be round the coast. This flaw aside, much of the novel pleasantly blends the period details and high adventure typical of Westall's other World War II novels.

The only way for an American to get to know England is to make friends with the English, go into their houses and meet their friends. Two brilliant points of white, lighting up a black landscape of greenhouse, sweet-pea trellises and cucumber-frames. He even found some wooden seed markers, and wrote the rabbits’ names on them, and stuck them in for tombstones. He should be hearing their footsteps any second now, the patter of Mam’s shoes and the crunch of Dad’s hobnailed boots.
