About this deal

The Blindian Project — which was constructed to build solidarity between Black and Brown communities, and normalise interracial Black and Brown relationships — is an indicator of what need to see more of on our TV screens. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on.

That being said, Bridgerton is not an anomaly, but part of an American film and television complex in Hollywood where whiteness dictates who is worthy of love on screen. But Grey has a secret, a curse that will change his life when he turns 18 and has kept him isolated from the rest of the world for most of his life. All the boys ignore Bel–and Neelam, the only other girl on the team, doesn’t seem to like her either. If the filmmakers leaned too much on familiar human traits, the characters would lose their sense of universality. David, a man with truly nothing but the best of intentions, finds a miracle drug-creating device and sets out to make the world a better place.

Following season one of Bridgerton, I was challenged at how it positioned the inclusion of Black characters as progress when in terms of numbers, they are still few. Golden boy Joshua Rawson is used to getting pegged by his girlfriend, but when he thinks he hears another name while she's at it he gets jealous. Period dramas routinely have failed to include Black and Brown potential audiences due to our exclusion from these texts. Sixteen-year-old Yamilet Flores prefers to be known for her killer eyeliner, not for being one of the only Mexican kids at her new, mostly white, very rich Catholic school. Many enemies line up at the barre, seeking to destroy, defile, and watch them fall, losing everything they've ever held dear.

Any movie involving the second-generation immigrant experience became a source of inspiration — including some very unlikely choices for a family-friendly animated movie. The Truth of Right Now follows isolated teenagers Lily and Dari, two students who meet in a privileged Manhattan high school. But when Anna crosses paths with notorious playboy Alexia “Count” Vronsky at Grand Central, the two fall hopelessly in love. Sohn also cites 2013’s The Immigrant, about a Polish woman (played by Marion Cotillard) immigrating to America in the 1920s, and 2015’s Brooklyn, which stars Saoirse Ronan as a young Irish immigrant in the 1950s. Agreeing to resurrect him puts her at odds with her mother, draws her into a dangerous liminal world of monsters and magic—and worse, leaves her stuck with Zach. One way or another, their close relationship has played an important part in that character's destiny. Jamie and Maya never intended to spend their summer together, but then again, they never expected to spend their summer canvassing for their local state senate candidate either. Prince Amadeus comes from a small kingdom where the tradition is that anyone from the royal family is sold to the highest bidder for marriage once they reach the age of 21. While things like Black-ish do talk about ‘Black issues’, it still feels like a series tailored to the delicate sensibilities of the white people who do not have any Black friends! The labour of decolonising these representative paradigms is structural, and involves addressing their material histories.
