About this deal

Comprising a long hooked peninsula Crookhaven encloses an excellent natural harbour that is 2 miles long, a ⅓ of a mile wide and it has a deep eastward facing entrance with unhindered access. Here they were rigorously checked and then transported to the Fastnet Rock - see South Harbour (Ineer) . It is also well lit with its entrance points of Sheemon Point and Black Horse Rocks being lit and the former has a lighthouse. This debut puts a lovely new spin on the classic school story, offering a strong sense of community and togetherness in the face of adversity. Riding on a wave of success Marconi set up a number of stations for ship-to-shore communication on the South English and Irish coasts.

It was at the latter, in 1919, that the first east to west transatlantic telephone transmission took place. Its light shows red or white depending on direction; white over Long Island Bay; W131°-281° (150°), R281°-340° (59°), R281°-348° (67°), W348°-111° (123°). Encouraged by his earlier success between Poldhu, Cornwall and St Catherine's, Isle Of Wight, Marconi hoped to capture the signals from Poldhu in Crookhaven, 225 miles away and then get a signal across the Atlantic. Situated five miles to the east of Mizen Head, and six miles north-by-west from the Fastnet, two of the most prominent landmarks in the area, it offers a good, safe and convenient stop with spectacular surroundings and plenty of good company.

The construction of the adjacent quay could have been contemporary with this early use of the quarry, but the huge concrete and steel structures we see today are certainly an incarnation of the quarry workings in the early 20th century.

Located in Goleen, 38 km from St Patrick's Cathedral, Skibbereen, Goleen Harbour provides accommodation with a private beach area, free private parking, water sports facilities and a garden.

As the boats anchored in or out of the harbour, depending on their size, a flurry of small boats or lighters would swarm out striving to be the first there to get their business. It has been a dream of my husband's to live in a castle, and we got to do that for three nights with our two young adult sons. Although the harbour dries at low tide, giving great feeding for a variety of wildlife including a fox and a pheasant, there is a deepwater quay at the entrance to accommodate fishing boats and yachts.I couldn’t ignore, therefore, the huge steel and concrete structures which line the R591 road which approaches Crookhaven when travelling from Goleen. With a school wide competition to be crowned Top Crook and many mysteries to uncover, Gabriel's first year at Crookhaven will be one to remember.
