Before working as a storyboard artist on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, artist Patrick McHale pitched the show in 2006, then known under the title Tome of the Unknown.

Learn how the award-winning backgrounds were created, see animation storyboards, and even take a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the Mondo vinyl soundtrack and "For Sara" mix tape, as well as the ongoing Boom! The series would follow two brothers, Walter and Gregory, who after signing themselves into a Faustian deal with a devil named Old Scratch, journey across the Land of the In-Between to track down the pages of a book of forgotten stories. OTGW is a work about two brothers tripping through a purely American fairy tale, but it’s also the story of wonderful people making wonderful things in the insufferably early hours of the morning. Explore, create, and be inspired as we embark on a journey filled with limitless artistic possibilities. After creating a pilot episode, Tome of the Unknown: Harvest Melody, McHale and the network settled upon the miniseries format for the ensuing series, as McHale felt that it would lead to "something that felt higher quality than what we could do with a regular series".

Over the Garden Wall takes its legacy from the hand-painted soul of ‘30s animation, colonial tavern ghost stories, and ‘80s nostalgia. From the original T ome of the Unknown: Harvest Melody pilot, through each of the episodes, and beyond, take a strange and wonderful journey with Wirt, Greg, and Beatrice. The embossed cover design contains hidden references, and the applique is one of the first pieces of art that inspired the look of the show.It was the very first thing I ever showed my partner, and I’ve been wanting to get it for our anniversary. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There is a very faint ridge in the binding itself on the rear of book that can be seen in photo, also not a scratch.
